Doc’s Journey to Healing

When Doc came to us in October, he was in heartbreaking condition. Severely underweight, with his ribs visibly showing, he needed to gain at least 250 pounds to reach a healthy size. But his challenges didn’t stop there. Doc also showed signs of unexplained lameness in his back legs and neurological issues during his initial vet exam.

Our veterinarian diagnosed him with EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis), a neurological condition common in our area that can cause significant health problems for horses. It was clear that Doc needed immediate care and a lot of TLC to recover.

The Road to Recovery

We started Doc on an oral medication to treat his EPM and used this as an opportunity to build trust with him. Doc was initially nervous and jumpy around people, so we took things slow. Every morning, we’d gently put a halter on him, administer his medication, and then reward him with food before removing the halter.

The first few days were challenging for everyone, but Doc quickly caught on to the routine. Before long, he began to trust us, and his progress was nothing short of remarkable.

A Miracle Transformation

Just 1.5 months later, Dr. Metcalf conducted a follow-up exam and was amazed by Doc’s improvement. He called it the most significant recovery from EPM he had ever seen! The medication, combined with Doc’s fighting spirit, had worked wonders.

EPM had likely been the root cause of Doc’s lameness and difficulty gaining weight. But now, thanks to dedicated care and treatment, Doc has filled out beautifully and is thriving. He’s even found his place in the herd, proving that every animal deserves a chance to heal and belong.
