When this gentle draft boy came into our care, his eye was severely inflamed and actively draining. Our veterinary team determined the most likely cause was cancer. It was clear he was living with significant discomfort—and had been for far too long.
While the decision to remove an eye is never an easy one, it was the best path forward for his comfort and long-term quality of life.
Surgery Day: Strength on Full Display
Yesterday, “Jim” underwent surgery to have his eye removed. And true to who he is, he handled it like an absolute champion.
Strong. Gentle. Patient. Calm.
He showed us exactly who he is, even in the middle of something hard.
A Name Worthy of His Spirit
We had been calling him Jim as a temporary name, but it never felt like enough for a boy this special. He deserved a name that reflected his strength, courage, and quiet resilience.
So we invited our community to be part of his fresh start.
A Community Steps In
To celebrate his new chapter, we launched a short, special fundraising sprint in his honor. The highest donor would earn the privilege of officially naming him—because stories like his are never written alone.
The response was incredible. Thoughtful name ideas poured in. Donations followed. Love showed up.
Meet… Hercules!
Our fundraiser has officially come to an end, and we are beyond excited to introduce our newest rescue horse’s name: Hercules.
This powerful name was chosen by Rhonda, who donated the highest amount during the fundraiser.
In Greek mythology, Hercules represents courage, strength, and perseverance—an unmistakable reflection of this brave boy and everything he has already endured.
Thank you, Rhonda, for your incredible generosity and for giving him a name that will stay with him for life.
It Truly Takes a Village
We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to every single person who donated, shared, and submitted name ideas. This outcome was made possible because of all of you.
Because of this community, Hercules is safe. He is healing. And he is surrounded by love as he begins his next chapter.
Strong. Resilient. Deeply loved.
You are safe, Hercules.
What’s Next for Hercules
Hercules will remain at the hospital a little longer for a few additional bandage changes and continued monitoring. Each day brings more comfort—and a future that finally puts his well-being first.
We’ll continue to share updates as he heals. Thank you for standing with him, and with all of the animals who find safety through our Sanctuary.
