A Rescue That Ended Before It Began

Some stories don't get the ending we hoped for.

This week, our transporter headed out first thing in the morning to pick up a neglected mare we had committed to rescuing. Because of the holiday weekend, the holding facility had been closed for several days, and this was the very first opportunity to bring her into our care.

Our plan was already in place.

She was in such poor condition that she was going to be taken straight to the equine hospital for emergency evaluation and treatment.

But when our transporter arrived, she was met with heartbreaking news.

The mare had died over the weekend.

So Many Unanswered Questions

We don't know what happened. We don't know exactly when she passed.

We don't know whether anything could have changed the outcome if we'd been able to reach her sooner.

What we do know is that she had been abandoned in devastating condition, and she deserved so much more than the hand she had been dealt.

It's incredibly difficult to grieve an animal you never had the chance to meet, but our hearts ache for her just the same.

The Hardest Part of Rescue

Not every animal makes it to safety. Sometimes help comes too late. Sometimes all that's left is wondering what might have been.

In all our years of rescue, this is the first time we've lost an animal before we even had the opportunity to bring her home. It left us feeling helpless, frustrated, and heartbroken.

We Rescue the Next One

As painful as this loss is, it strengthens our resolve.

We can't change what happened to this sweet mare, but we can honor her by continuing to fight for the next horse who still has a chance.

Every rescue reminds us why this work matters so deeply. For every life we lose before we can reach them, there is another animal waiting for someone to say, "We'll come get you."

That is exactly what we'll keep doing.

For her. For the next one. And for every soul still waiting to be saved.
