A Sensitive Hoof for Sabrina

In June, our farrier, Glenn, noticed something concerning during Sabrina's routine hoof trim. She seemed to be extra sensitive on her back left foot. To get a better look, Dr. Metcalf examined her and took x-rays. Unfortunately, the news wasn't great.

An Old Injury with Lasting Effects

The x-rays revealed a severely rotated coffin bone in Sabrina's foot. This was due to an old injury she likely sustained before coming to our Sanctuary. Because of this injury, her hoof had significant damage and lacked proper support.

Thinking Outside the Stall

Typically, a special trim could help alleviate pressure on the injured toe. However, Sabrina's lack of typical hoof structure made this approach impossible. Our innovative vet team, led by Dr. Metcalf, needed to get creative!

Custom-Made Comfort

Dr. Metcalf decided to craft custom-fitted shoes for Sabrina's back feet. These unique shoes, made from plywood, provided much-needed support and helped keep her balanced. Typically, shoes are nailed on. However, due to lack of hoof, hers was put on with a cast.

In addition to the custom shoes, Sabrina is also receiving a daily combination of anti-inflammatories and a blood thinner. This combination aims to reduce discomfort and promote healing.

Looking Forward with Hope

We're incredibly optimistic about Sabrina's future! With the expertise of our veterinary team and these innovative solutions, we're hopeful she'll find lasting comfort and improved mobility. In four weeks, Dr. Metcalf will re-evaluate Sabrina's progress and determine the next steps on her road to recovery. Stay tuned for updates!
