Chamomile’s Brave New Beginning

Today, our sweet Chamomile headed to Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital to prepare for surgery—a moment we’ve been working toward for months.Last fall, we noticed something wasn’t right. Cami began experiencing unusual bleeding, and after many exams and tests, we discovered a mass in her uterus. It could be endometriosis or multiple small tumors. But either way, the path forward was clear: she needed a hysterectomy to remove her uterus and ovaries.

Why This Surgery Matters

For sheep and goats, anesthesia comes with added risk, making preparation just as important as the procedure itself.

To give Cami the safest possible outcome, she needed to lose at least 30 pounds before surgery. So, she and her best girl Blossom began a carefully managed weight-loss journey.

The “Relatable” Start

Their plan? Precisely measured hay… weighed with a fish scale. And yet, despite all that effort, the first week they gained seven pounds. (We felt that.)

Walking It Out—Literally

So, we pivoted. Daily walks were added—and everything changed. Every two weeks, we made our way across the street to our friends at Chewy to weigh the girls.

What started as a medical necessity quickly became something so much bigger. A moment of joy. A moment of connection. A moment everyone looked forward to.

Cami and Blossom were completely unbothered. Just two sheep, casually strolling through a parking lot on leashes like it’s no big deal. Meanwhile, smiles followed them everywhere!

Incredible Results

All that dedication paid off in the best way:

  • Chamomile lost nearly 40 pounds

  • Blossom lost an amazing 50 pounds

This journey didn’t just prepare Cami for surgery—it’s inspired us to rethink wellness habits for other animals in our care, too.

Surgery Day

With her health improved and her strength built up, Cami was ready. We asked for all the love, all the prayers, and all the positive thoughts as she went into surgery.

The Update We Were Hoping For

Chamomile made it through surgery, and she did wonderful. Her uterus was confirmed to be abnormal and was sent to pathology for further testing. And now, we have answers.

Pathology confirmed that Chamomile had endometriosis.

On the Road to Recovery

When we spoke with her doctor, Cami was already awake, back in her stall… and enjoying a snack (of course).

She’ll continue to be monitored closely, receiving pain management and lots of care as she heals. We’re hopeful her stay will be short, and that she’ll be back home with her Sanctuary family very soon.

So Much Gratitude

This journey has been filled with challenges, surprises, and so much heart. We are incredibly proud of Chamomile and so thankful for Blossom, her steady companion. And deeply grateful for every person who cheered them on along the way.
