Compadre’s Steps Towards Comfort

Compadre is an elderly donkey who came to us with chronic foot problems. For the past year, Dr. Metcalf has been diligently working to improve his hoof health. However, in the last two weeks, we noticed he was lying down more than usual, so we decided to investigate further during his latest podiatry appointment.

A Shocking Growth Spurt!

Before taking X-rays, Dr. Metcalf was surprised to see that Compadre’s hooves had grown significantly—just in six weeks! This kind of rapid growth can happen in the spring, and while it’s not necessarily bad, it was definitely unexpected.

X-Rays Reveal a Challenge

Unfortunately, the X-rays brought some difficult news: Compadre has pressure necrosis in his bones. Essentially, years of hoof issues have led to bone demineralization, making his condition more complex.

Building a Better Future

To help relieve pressure and support his feet, Dr. Metcalf used a special glue to build up his hoof and applied a cast for balance and stability. We’re hopeful this will make a significant difference in his comfort!

What’s Next?

Dr. Metcalf will reassess Compadre’s progress in six weeks. If we don’t see improvement—or if his condition worsens—we’ll take another set of X-rays to determine the next steps.

Note: Compadre is sedated for his visits for his safety (and ours!).

We’re grateful for Dr. Metcalf’s dedication and expertise in helping Compadre stay as comfortable and mobile as possible. Stay tuned for updates on his journey!

Update:

Compadre has been walking so much better since his visit with Dr. Metcalf! With his new trim, his balance has improved, and we’re seeing him spend more time standing and grazing—though he still loves a good nap in the sunshine. 🌞💛 We’ve also started him on Loranthus, an herbal supplement to support his mobility, and we’re excited to see even more progress!
