In April, we welcomed two special donkeys, Compadre and Poppi, into our Foster to Heal program. Each brought their own story of resilience, but both arrived with the same goal: healing and hope.
Compadre was rescued by Turning Pointe Donkey Rescue (TPDR) with hooves in terrible condition—so neglected they had curled like ram’s horns. Months of intensive corrective work at the hospital made progress, but years of neglect left lasting effects that required ongoing care.
A Bond Like No Other
While Poppi was healing, Compadre became her loyal companion. These two were inseparable—roommates who often relaxed side by side. Their friendship was a comforting constant during a challenging time.
A Sole-Saving Treatment
Behind the scenes, Dr. Metcalf worked tirelessly on Compadre’s hooves. For months, he wore dental impressions to provide custom support, helping his feet adjust and heal. Eventually, he “graduated” to a milder support system. Instead of dental impressions, Dr. Metcalf applied a custom cast material after each trim, giving his feet the unique care they needed.
Saying Goodbye to Poppi
Our plan was always to help Poppi and Compadre heal and find forever homes in Michigan. Sadly, after helping Poppi cross the rainbow bridge, we realized Compadre needed more than just a forever home—he needed a forever specialist.
Welcome Home, Compadre!
We decided the best place for Compadre to live out his golden years was right here with us. Now, he’s thriving and has found an unexpected best friend in Harvey—his lookalike! From a distance, you can’t tell these two apart.
We are endlessly thankful to TPDR for connecting us with Compadre and Poppi. Compadre has truly found his place here, and we’re overjoyed to give him the life he deserves—filled with love, care, and plenty of donkey antics.
