George recently checked off the final item on his “become a normal horse” list… he got his teeth done!
For horses, dental care is essential. Their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, which means they need to be floated (filed and balanced) about once a year. Keeping their teeth properly aligned helps them chew comfortably and fully absorb the nutrients from their food.
Waiting Until He Was Strong Enough
George’s dental appointment had to wait a little longer than usual.
When he first arrived at the Sanctuary, his body condition was extremely poor, and it simply wasn’t safe for him to undergo sedation yet. Our goal was to help him gain enough weight and strength before scheduling the procedure.
Thanks to lots of groceries, care, and patience, George finally reached that milestone.
A Champ in the Chair
And he did absolutely wonderful!
During the procedure, the veterinary team removed two teeth—one full tooth and one remaining fragment. George handled the entire process like a total champ.
How Old Is George?
One of the ways veterinarians estimate a horse’s age is by examining their teeth.
Based on his dental exam, George is estimated to be around 25 or 26 years young.
Herd Life, Here He Comes
The best part of all? George is now fully integrated with the herd, including joining everyone on our track system for daily movement and social time.
And let’s just say… he’s feeling pretty good about life. George has so much energy right now—he’s practically bouncing like a bunny!
