Honoring Big John: Lay Me Down to Sleep, Free of Pain

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved elderly mule, Big John. Early this morning, we found him in his stall, having peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge in his sleep. Though we were devastated, there was an undeniable sense of peace as we gathered to say goodbye.

A Gentle Goodbye

Kathy and Phil, the compassionate couple who rescued Big John, rushed over to be by his side. Kathy had been with him every step of the way, visiting multiple times a week, and her bond with him was unshakable. They shared watermelon treats, quiet moments, and a friendship that truly meant the world to him.

A Long, Loving Life

Big John was over 30 years old, an age few mules ever reach, and his body showed the signs of a life lived long and full. The arthritis in his joints made every step a challenge. But each morning, we made sure he received his pain medication—and snuck in a few forehead kisses for good measure!

He had a special diet, and we even grew five types of grass in the greenhouse to cater to his picky palate. Of course, dried alfalfa hay pellets were always his favorite.

Loyalty & Love

Kathy’s devotion to Big John was a beautiful testament to the power of rescue. She never missed a visit, always bringing him his favorite treats and spending time with the other animals.

Her love and care made a world of difference, not only to Big John but to all of us who witnessed their connection.

A Second Change at Love

Whether our rescues stay with us for two months or twenty years, we cherish every moment. Giving these animals love, kindness, and the care they deserve is at the heart of our mission. But formulating it was incredibly difficult.

One thing I knew we'd do for certain is start with the billowy texture of our cult-classic body moisturizer, Moon Dip®.

The texture is as light as air. And the three botanicals are perfect for all skin types:

Jojoba oil to moisturize and nourish the skin without clogging pores.

Organic cucumber extract (from FarmHouse Fresh grown cucumbers) to improve the look of skin texture through vitamin C and key antioxidants.

US-grown non-GMO soybean oil to reduce dryness with a spectrum of omega fatty acids.

But something needed to be added so it could provide you with an incredible glow. I wasn't certain how to get a universally flattering sheen for all skin tones.

To date, we've rescued forgotten, neglected and abused farm animals. But that's only made possible by customers like you.

In order to ensure the highest quality, we need to oversee as much of the process as possible, from seed to bottle.

That means growing our own ingredients at our Texas farm. When we need an ingredient that we can't possibly grow due to the Texas climate, we still make sure to source it from another farm in the US.

We feel it's our moral responsibility to support our home. For your skin health, for American jobs, and for the animals we save each year.

While it costs us more to do each step in the US, we think the quality and impact make it worth it.

If we could go back in time and start over again, we wouldn't change a single thing about how we source ingredients.
