Our sweet senior girl Lucy was looking a little off—quiet, uncomfortable, and turning down her favorite snacks. That’s always a red flag around here. When a horse lays down more than usual and shows no interest in food, we know it's time to act fast.
A Trip to the Hospital
To be safe, we brought Lucy to the incredible team at Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital. Older horses can hide symptoms well, so we didn’t want to take any chances. The team monitored her closely, and their initial concern was serious: a possible tumor compressing her small intestine.
Good News After a Scary Start
Thankfully, further tests ruled that out. What she was experiencing was likely a bout of colic, and a few rounds of fluids worked wonders. Her spirits lifted, and so did ours!
A Few Extra Days—Just in Case
Lucy stayed a couple more days under observation—because when it comes to our older residents, we’d rather be overly cautious than too quick to bring them home. She got plenty of love from the hospital staff and made a full recovery!
Back Home & Feeling Herself Again
Lucy is now back at the Sanctuary, happy, healthy, and back to being her adorable self. We’re so grateful for the team that cared for her—and for Lucy’s resilience through it all.
