Cushing’s disease—formally known as Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID)—is one of the most common endocrine disorders in older horses. Symptoms include delayed or incomplete shedding, abnormal hair growth, weight loss, and slower healing of wounds.

Rosie joined the Sanctuary in 2022 and was diagnosed with Cushing’s just months later. Thankfully, with daily medication to regulate her hormones, she’s managed the condition beautifully—and enjoys a happy, healthy life.

Recently, we noticed Wonder and Yosemite Sam weren’t shedding their winter coats—something that raises concern during scorching Texas summers. Their thick coats reminded us of Rosie’s early symptoms.
A Trusted Treatment Plan
After consulting with our veterinarian, we started Wonder and Sammy on the same medication Rosie takes daily. And we’re already seeing progress! Both are beginning to shed out, which tells us the treatment is taking hold. With continued monitoring and care, we’re optimistic that Wonder and Yosemite Sam will respond just as well as Rosie has. Managing Cushing’s is a long-term journey, but with the right support, our rescues can thrive.
