EPM Concerns for Spirit

We recently noticed something unusual while trimming Spirit's hooves. Our normally sweet, calm and cooperative horse was acting strangely. Initially, we thought he was simply being stubborn, but as Dr. Metcalf began working, it became clear that something more was going on. Spirit was having trouble balancing.

Uncovering the Issue

Dr. Metcalf performed a neurological exam, which involves walking the horse in small circles and pulling the tail while someone walks the horse. This helps assess balance, strength, and reaction time.

While Spirit’s tail pull test was pretty normal, his performance in the circles was off, and his back left foot was turning in oddly whenever he placed it down.

A Suspected Diagnosis

Based on Spirit's symptoms, we believe he may have EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis) – a neurological disease caused by eating infected opossum manure, which is common in this area.

An Optimistic Recovery

Thankfully, EPM is treatable! Spirit has already started medication and we'll be monitoring his progress closely. He will be checked again in about 30 days to see how he's doing.

We're optimistic about his recovery and will provide updates as we have them. We appreciate your continued support as we care for Spirit and all our Sanctuary animals!
