Today was a big day at the Sanctuary—vaccination day for our sheep and goats! A total of 25 animals received their annual protection, ensuring they stay happy and healthy all year long.
Why Vaccinations Matter
Each spring, our sheep and goats receive the CDT vaccine. This essential shot shields them from Clostridium perfringens types C and D (which cause enterotoxemia, also known as "overeating disease") and Clostridium tetani (which leads to tetanus). These diseases can be life-threatening, so prevention is key!
A Wellness Check-Up, Too!
Vaccination day isn’t just about shots—it’s also a chance for a thorough health check. We use this time to evaluate each animal’s FAMACHA score, a system that helps us assess anemia levels by comparing the color of their eye mucous membranes to a chart. This helps us keep an eye on their overall health and detect early signs of parasite-related anemia.
A+ for all! Our flock handled their vaccines like champs, and we’re thrilled to report that all FAMACHA scores looked great! Our trusted vet, Dr. Avery, also checks these scores during her regular herd evaluations, ensuring our animals receive top-notch care year-round.
With another successful vaccination day in the books, our sheep and goats are set for a season of grazing, playing, and thriving at the Sanctuary!
