Yosemite Sam, or just Sammy to us, arrived in September 2024 through our Foster to Heal program. Rescued from auction by Singing Whales Rescue and Rehabilitation, he came to us for care before his planned move to a forever home.
What We Didn’t See at First
Photos showed a healthy horse, but Dr. Metcalf’s exam told a tougher story—Sammy was battling pleural effusion (fluid in his chest) and laminitis in all four feet. Both serious on their own, together they posed a deep challenge.
The Healing Begins
We jumped into action: three daily antibiotics for the effusion, anti-inflammatories for pain, and special supportive shoes for his feet. Weeks later, ultrasounds confirmed the fluid was gone. By January, X-rays revealed major improvement in his back feet, though his fronts still needed care and clogs for support.
Love Changes Everything

While healing, Sammy found a new love—Maggie, our team’s gentle mare. And we fell in love with him too. Plans to send him to Hawaii grew complicated. So, he stayed. He became family.
A New Best Friend for Maggie
Maggie lost her lifelong buddy Benny in January. Watching Sammy fill that space and bring her comfort has been a true gift.
