We recently received a call from our friends at Singing Whales Rescue and Rehabilitation with a request that tugged at our hearts. Could we take in three horses—each in an unknown condition—until January, when they'd be transported to their forever homes in Hawaii? Without hesitation, we said yes!
A 10-Hour Journey to Safety
Early Friday morning, our trusted transporter, Justin, set out on a 10-hour trip to pick up the horses and bring them safely to our Sanctuary. As soon as they arrived, our veterinarian, Dr. Metcalf, was ready and waiting to give them a thorough check-up.
Meet Theodore & Picasso: The Minis with Big Personalities
Two of the horses, Theodore and Picasso, are minis who had been rescued from an auction last month. They’ve been staying together at a property, and we’re thrilled to report that they’re in great shape! Theodore, a 2-year-old, will soon need to be gelded, but he’s otherwise healthy. His buddy Picasso is just 6 months old, and he’s as cute as can be!
Yosemite Sam: A Tough Diagnosis
Then there’s Yosemite Sam, a senior horse we picked up directly from the auction. At first, we thought his evaluation would be routine. But as Dr. Metcalf began the exam, concerns arose. Yosemite Sam was quickly unloaded from the trailer, and we rushed to get his feet x-rayed and an ultrasound on his chest.
What we found was heartbreaking. Yosemite Sam’s lungs are in bad shape, and he has significant rotation in both of his front feet—similar to a condition we’ve treated in one of our other rescues, Orion. We immediately started him on the same three antibiotics and pain medication we used for Orion. At about 18 years old, Yosemite Sam has a tough road ahead, but we’re committed to giving him all the care and love he needs to heal.
Next Steps for Yosemite Sam
We’re giving Yosemite Sam a few days to settle in and relax after what he’s been through. After that, Dr. Metcalf will recheck his lungs and feet to see how he’s progressing.
Looking to the Future
While we’re hopeful that Theodore, Picasso, and Yosemite Sam will make full recoveries, we know the journey isn’t over yet. They’re safe now, and with your support, we’ll give them everything they need to thrive until they head off to their forever homes.
