A Tiny Survivor: Meet Thumbelina

This past Fourth of July turned into a nightmare when a frightened mule, startled by the loud fireworks, bolted from its pen, tragically stepping on innocent little Thumbelina. This tiny, three-month-old goat suffered a horrific injury that could have easily ended her young life.

Determined to give Thumbelina a fighting chance, her owner brought her to us.

A Delicate Situation

Upon examination by Dr. Avery, it was clear that Thumbelina’s back leg was fractured. The decision of how to proceed was incredibly difficult. Surgery was risky, amputation was heartbreaking, and casting offered hope but no guarantees. Ultimately, we decided to cast her leg, hoping that (at her young age) the bone will heal properly.

A Hero Emerges

To complicate matters, we recently discovered that Thumbelina was severely anemic, likely due to her injury. But just when we thought things couldn’t get any tougher, our beloved goat, Butters, stepped up as a true hero. He selflessly donated blood to Thumbelina, giving her a much-needed boost! We saw an immediate and remarkable improvement in Thumbelina’s health.

Hope for the Future

After a few days of care with Dr. Avery, Thumbelina returned home to us. To ensure her well-being and protect the herd, she'll be quarantined for 30 days. We'll continue monitoring her closely for any changes in her leg and make weekly visits to Dr. Avery for check-ups.

Thumbelina has captured our hearts with her sweet and gentle nature. We're grateful for the outpouring of support and well wishes. Your encouragement means the world to us and to little Thumbelina.

We can’t wait to share updates on her progress!
