Orion's First Week: Good News & Next Steps

Orion, our newest rescue, has had quite the first week! He’s been receiving exceptional care at Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital—medically and emotionally.

From getting his teeth floated for better eating comfort to a nebulizer treatment for his pneumonia, and even a special bath from Dr. Splawn, Orion is getting the best start to his recovery.

Good News From Dr. Splawn

On August 26, Dr. Splawn gave us some fantastic news: Orion is ready to come home! His bloodwork looks great, showing normal white blood cell counts. Although his lungs still need healing, his progress on the nebulizer has been promising. He’ll continue with antibiotics to help his pneumonia and will be rechecked in a month. For now, Orion will quarantine in our medical stall and continue on a refeeding program.

Orion Arrives at our Sanctuary

By August 28, Orion was officially back with us at our Sanctuary! He’s starting a strict refeeding program with small, frequent meals of grain and alfalfa hay. To keep him safe and healthy, Orion will be quarantined for 30 days, ensuring he has no contact with our other animals while our team maintains strict sanitation procedures.

Refeeding Plan: An Overview

To give you an idea of the meticulous care Orion is receiving, here’s a glimpse of his refeeding plan:

    Looking Ahead

Orion’s journey is just beginning, and we’re committed to providing him with all the care he needs to thrive.

Thank you for supporting our Sanctuary and joining us in celebrating the progress of our brave new friend. Stay tuned for more updates on Orion's recovery and well-being!
