We received devastating news this week.
When Hercules arrived at the Sanctuary in February, he was already fighting through pain. One of his eyes was severely inflamed and oozing, and it was clear he needed immediate help.
He underwent surgery to have the eye removed, and while we hoped that would bring relief, his healing journey proved more complicated than expected.
A Hidden Complication
When his recovery stalled, Dr. Metcalf took a closer look. An ultrasound revealed something unexpected—a remaining bone fragment in the surgical area that was preventing proper healing.
Last week, Hercules went back into surgery to remove it.
An Unimaginable Discovery
During the procedure, Dr. Metcalf discovered and removed a suspicious mass. It was sent off for testing, and we held onto hope while we waited.
The results came back with heartbreaking clarity: squamous cell carcinoma.
During surgery, it was clear the surrounding bone had already been affected.
No More “Fixes”
Because the cancer has spread into the bone, there are no treatment options that can improve or extend Hercules’ life. It’s the kind of news that stops you in your tracks.
What Matters Most Now
Right now, Hercules is comfortable. He’s eating well. He’s grazing peacefully with Meg. He’s soaking up the sunshine like nothing has changed.
And in many ways, that’s exactly the point.
A Promise We Can Keep
We may not be able to change his diagnosis. But we can shape what comes next.
Every day from here forward will be filled with comfort, dignity, and love—just as it should have always been. And Hercules will never face another day without knowing he is safe, cared for, and deeply loved.
