“This is probably the worst body condition you’ve ever had here,” Dr. Metcalf said the moment he saw George. Skin and bones, covered in fresh and old wounds, he scored just 1 out of 9 on the body condition scale. It was clear that George had suffered long-term neglect—but thanks to supporters like you, he now has a fighting chance.
Immediate Care
When we picked him up, George went straight to the team at Weems. He received a full evaluation, including bloodwork, a chest ultrasound, and a thorough examination of his teeth and wounds.
Photos couldn’t capture the severity of the wound on his back hip, oozing with discharge. As Dr. Stancoff cleaned it, he discovered a small puncture hole—likely from an injury months earlier. Bloodwork confirmed a serious infection stemming from the wound.
Hidden Damage
Once George settled at the Sanctuary, Dr. Metcalf performed a hip ultrasound and discovered several pieces of sequestered bone—dead fragments from the old injury. At just 650 pounds, far below the 1,100 pounds he should weigh, George first needs to gain at least 100 pounds to have a real chance at recovery and healing some of his body sores.
Long-Term Neglect Signs
George’s tail was severely matted, full of burrs and tangles—a daily morning ritual now includes slow, gentle brushing to help him feel comfortable and cared for. His teeth are worn, likely from old age (we estimate over 25 years), and they will need floating and cleaning after he settles in.
Small Wins Every Day
Two weeks into his recovery, George is already showing progress:
✔️ Completed the UC Davis starved horse refeeding program and can now enjoy unlimited alfalfa hay
✔️ Getting large bowls of grain twice daily
✔️ On antibiotics and dewormer for infection and parasites
✔️ Loves being brushed—our team even sings to him while grooming
Improvements are happening every single day.
