In Loving Memory of Hercules

Some animals arrive at the Sanctuary broken in ways you can immediately see. Others reveal their heartbreak slowly.

Hercules came to us in January during an emergency mission to save four draft horses who desperately needed help. From the moment he arrived, we knew he was fighting hard. He suffered from a devastating eye injury, and within days, surgery was performed to remove the eye and give him relief.

What followed were months of healing.

Months of learning that human hands could be gentle. Months of discovering soft brushes, full meals, kind voices, and quiet safety. Months of slowly becoming part of a family.

A Name Worthy of His Spirit

Through a fundraiser, a woman in California won the opportunity to name him. She chose Hercules. And somehow, it fit perfectly.

Strong. Brave. Resilient.

Even after everything he’d endured, Hercules remained calm, affectionate, and deeply trusting. He greeted visitors with quiet curiosity and soaked up every ounce of love offered to him.

The Reunion That Changed Everything

After his initial hospital stay, Hercules was reunited with one of the horses rescued alongside him. We weren’t sure they would remember each other. But the moment they saw one another, we knew. There was recognition, comfort, relief.

They instantly settled beside each other like they had never been apart. That’s when we renamed her Meg.

Meg is pregnant and due any day now, and Hercules quickly earned the affectionate title of “stepfather.” He watched over her constantly, happiest when she was nearby. Their story became intertwined from the very beginning.

The News We Never Wanted

A few weeks ago, another surgery revealed something far more devastating than we expected.

Cancer.

At that point, everything changed. We shifted into hospice mode, knowing we didn’t have forever with him. We didn’t know if we had months or merely weeks. But we knew exactly what we wanted the rest of his life to feel like:

Peaceful. Safe. Loved. And it was.

A Morning That Felt Completely Normal

Yesterday morning began like any other. Hercules ate breakfast. He stood patiently while we checked his eye and sent updates to our veterinarian. Visitors stopped by, and he happily soaked up the attention, calm and friendly as always. His stall was cleaned. He ate lunch.

Everything seemed fine. And then the emergency happened.

When Everything Changed in an Instant

The call came suddenly, and the team rushed into action.

Medications were gathered. Horses were moved. Trailers were loaded. Staff jumped in seamlessly to help care for Hercules and the rest of the sanctuary animals all at once.

But even with all hands on deck, it became clear how much pain he was in. We rushed him to the hospital as quickly as possible, unsure if he would even survive the ride there. Somehow, he did.

The veterinary team met us immediately. Hercules was drenched in sweat, exhausted, and clearly suffering. Tests and examinations began right away. The diagnosis was heartbreaking: A twisted large colon.

The only possible treatment would have been an intensive surgery. But considering his age, his cancer diagnosis, and the immense strain already on his body, it would not have been fair to ask him to endure more pain. There really was no decision to make—only grief.

The Greatest Gift We Could Give

Of the four horses rescued that January weekend, two are still healing. And now, two are together at the Rainbow Bridge.

We don’t always know how to measure a life. Sometimes it’s not about how long an animal was with us, but what they experienced while they were here.

Hercules knew kindness. He knew what it felt like to have a full belly and gentle kisses on his face. He knew safety. Friendship. Soft bedding. Loving hands brushing his coat. People who fought for him. People who mourn him deeply now.

He came from a life where no one would have imagined hosting a fundraiser just to give him a special name. And yet, so many people loved him.

In the end, for a horse living with terminal cancer to experience less than two hours of severe pain before being gently helped to pass… that is mercy. That is dignity. That is love.

Forever Part of Meg’s Story

Hercules’ story does not end here. It lives on beside Meg and the baby she will soon bring into the world. It lives on in every person who rooted for him, cried for him, brushed him, fed him, or whispered goodbye.

We wish we could have had more time with him. But we are endlessly grateful for the time we did have. Run free, sweet Hercules. You were deeply loved.
