When Lucy started showing signs of colic, we didn’t hesitate. She was uncomfortable, quiet, and clearly not herself. This was enough to send us straight into action.
Straight to the Hospital
We rushed Lucy to the hospital, where Dr. Chisholm and her incredible team were already waiting. They got to work immediately with bloodwork, a full physical exam, and a complete colic workup.
The First Clues
Her bloodwork revealed two key issues: an infection and significant dehydration. An ultrasound of her abdomen showed an impaction and distended small intestines—explaining the colic signs, but not yet the why behind them.
One Small Detail Changed Everything
Then came a moment that made all the difference.
As we talked through Lucy’s symptoms, we asked Dr. Chisholm if we could show her a video—a short clip of Lucy coughing while resting in her stall. We’re sometimes asked why we document so much. This is why.
Dr. Chisholm immediately shifted focus and took the ultrasound to Lucy’s lungs. The left side looked normal. The right side told a very different story.
Two abscesses.
The Real Diagnosis
Lucy has pneumonia. And in that moment, we cried—not because pneumonia is something we want for her, but because it FINALLY explained everything!
The pneumonia made Lucy feel unwell and drink less, leading to dehydration. That dehydration caused the stomach impaction, which triggered the colic symptoms we were seeing.
Suddenly, all the pieces fit.
A Clear Path Forward
Pneumonia is serious—but it’s also treatable and fixable.
Lucy was immediately started on fluids, pain medication, and antibiotics. She’ll remain hospitalized for a few days as she recovers from the dehydration and impaction while the pneumonia is treated.
So Grateful, So Thankful
We are incredibly thankful we caught this when we did—and that Lucy received swift, expert care. Catching it early made all the difference, and we’re already seeing her comfort improve.
Lucy is strong, deeply loved, and exactly where she needs to be. We’ll continue to share updates as she heals, and we’re so grateful to everyone who keeps her (and all our Sanctuary residents) in their hearts.
