Yosemite Sam: New Year, New X-Ray

On January 2, Dr. Metcalf visited the Sanctuary to check in on our beloved Yosemite Sam’s hooves. With a fresh set of X-rays, we got a clear look at his progress—and the results are promising!

Stepping Into Stronger Soles

The good news? His hind hooves have developed more sole depth, which means they’re getting stronger. Dr. Metcalf believes he’s in a good place to start transitioning to barefoot in the back—a huge win for his hoof health!

Front Hooves: A Growth Spurt & Steady Progress

Yosemite Sam has been on a hoof-growing spree—his front hooves doubled their sole, which is fantastic. His rotation has returned to a more normal range, but his hooves still need support. Right now, they’re not quite stable enough to go without his front clogs, so he’ll continue wearing them a little longer.

The Road Ahead: 18 Weeks to Barefoot?

While he’s looking great overall, he’ll likely need about three more trims—roughly 18 weeks—before he can safely go without front clogs. Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to hoof rehabilitation, and we’re thrilled with his progress!

Stay tuned for more updates on Yosemite Sam’s hoof journey—we can’t wait to see him trotting strong and clog-free soon!
