The Soda Pop Girls—Fanta, Cola, and Shasta—are getting used to their new rhythm at the Sanctuary! Each morning starts with a grain-filled stall, followed by haltering and medication time.
All three are on anti-inflammatories to ease pain from their neglected hooves, while Fanta is also on two antibiotics to treat pneumonia. After meds, it’s fly spray time—essential for battling those pesky Texas bugs!
First Trims in Over a Decade
Dr. Metcalf has begun the long-overdue process of trimming their hooves. Fanta and Cola likely haven’t had a proper trim in their 10 years of life. Both were found to have white line disease—a fungal infection—in one hoof each. In week one, Cola and Shasta received trims under sedation, followed by protective fly boots. Fanta wasn’t yet stable enough.
Lung Check: Fanta’s Asthma Diagnosis
An ultrasound confirmed what we suspected: Fanta has asthma, explaining her heavy wheezing. We’re monitoring her breathing closely with regular checkups.
Week Two: Custom Hoof Support & Big Progress
Dr. Metcalf returned to recheck all three girls. He used dental impression material to craft custom hoof support for Shasta and Cola, who suffer from tendon and balance issues due to years of neglect. The big news? Fanta’s lungs had improved enough for sedation—so she finally got her trim!
Still Healing, But Full of Heart
The Soda Pop Girls will remain in quarantine while Fanta finishes her antibiotics. Their bond is unbreakable, and it's been beautiful to watch their personalities emerge as they learn to trust us.
For them, healing comes in the form of food, scratches, photos—and lots of LOVE.
Thank you for supporting the Soda Pop Girls. Your kindness helps us give these girls the care they’ve always deserved.
